A section of an express train derailed after crossing a bridge on the Beki river in eastern India, plunging into the swollen water and killing at least 45 people. Many more believed buried as officials warned of entombed victims in submerged coaches.
Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, at a dinner for Bulgarian Communist Party chief Todor Zhivkov, accused China of dangerous and adventuristic plans to undermine detente and threaten world peace in his first direct critique in months.
In Khartoum the Soviet Union recalled its ambassador as part of halving embassy staff after a dispute over the reduction order. The move signals a diplomatic protest while Sudanese authorities confirm the staffing cutback and intensified Soviet diplomacy.
In Cedar Rapids and area, construction project shutdowns press on into week three as talks with Allied Construction Interests continue. Carpenters in Cedar Rapids and nearby cities held Saturday voting on a tentative contract while millwrights prepare to vote Thursday night. Plumbers Local 125 and Iowa City area mech contractors also negotiated with the same group as plumbers’ pact expires Tuesday. Iowa City laborers accepted a two year deal with 72.5 cents in year one plus a cost of living rise in year two. Cedar Rapids laborers rejected a 73.5 cent wage increase and future raises, with prior wages around 6.40 an hour.
Two Shellsburg residents were injured when they fell off a motorcycle in Atkins at 2 p.m. Monday. Shirley Fuchrer, 23, was listed in fair condition at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, while Margaret Johnson, 18, received treatment there and was released.
In Oelwein eight women distracted clerks at Sedachian’s Pharmacy Sunday evening while one removed large bills from bank bags in an unstaffed safe. The theft occurred Sunday and was not noticed until Monday, officials said, noting similarity to an earlier incident in Independence.
An 11 year old boy Victor Lee Christianson, son of Mr and Mrs Ehlmen Christianson, drowned Sunday while wading in the Mississippi River at Black Hawk State Park near DeSoto Wisconsin. He was born January 20 1959 in Waukon and attended local schools. Survived by parents three brothers Richard Robert and Steven all at home and a grandmother Mrs Hilmen Christiansen. Services scheduled Wednesday at 1 30 PM at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran church with burial at the church. arrangements handled by Martin funeral home in Waukon until Tuesday.

A rural Bellevue man, 22 year old Dim Achen, fractured his neck diving from a board into four feet of water at Lake Delhi Sunday. He was in good condition Tuesday at University Hospitals in Iowa City after two companions pulled him from the water.
