New jail plan for Johnson County aims at 140 beds
Johnson County unveils a preliminary proposal for a new jail and sheriff s office with space for 140 inmates, more than double the current 65 bed capacity, at an estimated cost of 80 million dollars. The 1981 facility is in very poor condition per a 2022 audit and relies on other jails to house overflow inmates. Shive-Hattery of Cedar Rapids is contracted for design work.
