Derek T. Messenger, 23, was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a one way street in Iowa City. He backed away and fled, then was captured after a brief pursuit. A preliminary breath test showed .262 BAC. Messenger has a prior OWI conviction from May 2010.
Iowa City police report a 27 year old West Burlington woman was arrested for operating while intoxicated with a 5 year old daughter in the vehicle along with two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Officers say marijuana and oxycodone were found after a drug search.
Cedar Rapids recently added a flashing yellow arrow for left turns at Third Avenue and Eighth Street Southeast with drivers responding well. Iowa City and Coralville have no immediate plans but may add them during signal upgrades. A five section signal costs 800 to 900 dollars, with cheaper flashing arrow units.
Jennifer Lewis, a Kennedy High School chemistry teacher since 2009, died when a tree fell onto her tent at Lake Macbride State Park during a severe thunderstorm. Principal Mary Wilcynski said counselors would assist students and staff. Lewis was a Washington, Iowa native and Coe College honors graduate.
