Mother Mosque rises stronger after Cedar River flood
Imam Taha Tawil guides visitors through the Iowa Islamic Heritage and Culture Center basement now rebuilt after last year’s flood. Artifacts were damaged but the mosque reopened with updated spaces and wider community involvement. Volunteers, Christians and Muslims alike, helped restore the 75 year old site to host education on diversity and Islam.

Unknowns hinder Cedar Rapids flood recovery volunteer effort
Cedar Rapids volunteers face project shortages as many homes remain empty or damaged after last year’s flood. The rebuild offices cap registrations due to insufficient homeowner contact and unclear status of repairs. Disaster coordinator Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner notes abundant work downtown but no homeowner guidance yet. The Community Recovery Center at 220 Sixth St NW remains a key contact point.
