Police arrested two youths after they allegedly broke into Paramount Pharmacy No. 1 at 2706 First Avenue NE. One boy fled, was chased and wounded a cut over the eye. the other, 16, was later arrested at home. Burglars forced a rear door with a baseball bat. cash and drugs were stolen, most of which were recovered. Both suspects are in city jail.
Dr. Robert Voas outlines five evaluation areas for Peace Corps volunteers including skill motivation interpersonal effectiveness language and emotional maturity. The typical candidate is a 22 year old liberal arts graduate from California or New England with some foreign language study and extracurricular activity, most likely male.
The fourth John Fitzgerald Kennedy award will honor Rt. Rev. Msgr. Maurice Sheehy, USNR retired, a Loras College alumnus and former faculty member. The gold medal and illuminated citation recognize him as an outstanding American. He has served as priest educator author and naval chaplain with 35 years in teaching at Loras and the Catholic University of America. He recently retired as pastor of St. Pius X in Cedar Rapids and lives at Mercy hospital in Dubuque.

A school axe knocked the safe dial, a bar pried cabinets and Wolf's desk. $32.04 stolen from the safe and some change from the desk.

Highway Patrolman Charles Hauck of Marion arrested Ralph Stahle of 1117 O Avenue NW for drunk driving at 10 05 p m near Highway 30 and Ely road. Both men recalled serving together at Fort Lewis in 1957 and ended the night with a handshake and praise. Stahle posted a 500 bond and was released.
Three youths were arrested about 2 a.m. at Flamingo Pizza Palace in Des Moines for possession of beer by minors. William J. Elias 19 Paul Hostak 18 and Raymond K. Houser 18 were released after posting $110 bonds. Houser was also charged with failure to carry and display a valid Iowa driver’s license.
Gustav W. McSkimming of McSkimming's Tax Service was sentenced to six months in federal prison on one count of willfully failing to file a federal income tax return. A Gazette article had described the offense as income tax evasion, which is a different charge. McSkimming was not charged with evasion.
Police answered a complaint from a landlady in Cedar Rapids Monday evening and found tenants Robert L. Deeds and Rachel Deeds were both wanted on warrants. Robert Deeds, 34, faced charges of no driver's license and improper registration and was jailed on a $220 bond in the county jail. Rachel Deeds, 38, cited by a 1965 warrant for false uttering of a check, was held in the city jail on a $110 bond.
Atty. General Turner rules two Regents bond bills constitutional approving long range financing for state board of regents construction. One bill targets University of Iowa hospital projects while the other covers Iowa State University State College of Iowa and University of Iowa construction. Bonds would be financed and retired from income including hospital income and student fees. In a separate opinion, Zeller says market rabbits are not domestic animals under Tama County law, bars a commercial raiser from a dog-caused loss claim.
Richard D. Coulbourn, 38, of 1420 First Avenue NE, was struck by a car after his wheel fell from his vehicle on the Cedar River Bridge. He suffered broken legs and other injuries. a second ambulance accident caused no additional injuries. Coulbourn remained in fairly good condition at St Luke’s hospital.
Viet Minh infantry and 9th division forces clash as U S Marines push near the DMZ with daily air and artillery support. In a day long action, 33 Viet Cong are said killed, two helicopters downed but later recovered, and one American killed with another wounded. Marines report bunkered North Vietnamese positions at hill 174 just 200 yards below the DMZ amid ongoing sweeps and incursions.
