Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden announced a new policy effective Jan 31 targeting offenders who elude police during speeding or traffic violations. The policy follows a rise in such cases from 45 in 2014 to 88 in 2017, with some incidents ending in fatal crashes. One example cited was April 2015 when Lawson Chadwick led a high speed chase while under methamphetamine influence, causing the death of Stephen Cook. Chadwick faces homicide by vehicle and theft charges and is serving 40 years.
