Area campgrounds fill as nice weather arrives

The Cedar Rapids area prepares for the summer recreation season with forecasts of 70 degree weekend weather and possible showers. Campgrounds at Lake Macbride State Park and Kent Park open with lifeguards on Macbride Beach. Kent Park beach lacks lifeguards. Water levels are high at Coralville Lake, with warnings about floating debris. Many campgrounds report near capacity and note varying rates for electric sites and tent grounds.

Rivers May Pose Health Risk For Swimmers In Iowa Rivers

Eastern Iowans heading to rivers for the three day weekend are warned that a dip in the Iowa or Cedar rivers could be hazardous. University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory experts caution that pollution from livestock and human waste can cause gastro intestinal issues if swimmers are submerged. Wading poses less risk but bath or shower afterward is advised. Fish are still considered safe to eat despite runoff.
