Money supply falls slightly amid Fed policy doubt
U S money supply declined by 1.3 billion in the latest week, a level analysts say may not deter the Federal Reserve from easing policy. Bank of New York's William V. Sullivan Jr. calls the drop largely in line with expectations, though markets hoped for a bigger decline. Net borrowed reserves show slight tightening after a prior drop, suggesting last week's easing aimed to calm markets after the Drysdale default. Ml stood at 451.5 billion for the week ending May 19, down from 452.8 billion. Business loan demand slid by 477 million, with New York City banks posting a 517 million decrease. Heavy storms saturated Cedar Rapids with rainfall for May’s total quota in under 24 hours.
