Iowa considers replacing three man tax commission with single administrator

Iowa lawmakers study group urges consolidation of the state tax commission and local assessment oversight into one expert director. Sen. Leo Elthon says a single administrator could enforce equalization more effectively and cheaper than the current three commissioners who each earn 10 000 a year. The commission collects over 150 million dollars in state taxes annually.

SUI Degree to Frank Starzel After 40 Years

Frank Starzel 59 of LeMars and former Associated Press general manager will receive a bachelor’s degree in English with a journalism specialization from the University of Iowa. He pursued the degree via ISUI correspondence after retiring from the AP in 1963, completing geography and American government courses this year.

Legislative study committee members listed with party and districts

Starzel family ties mark Bloomington journal history

Editor of the Pantagraph in Bloomington and Chicago Journal staffer joined AP in 1929 and became general manager in 1948. Earlier he worked at the LeMars Globe-Post, a weekly published by his brother Rome Starzel. Mrs Frank Starzel native of Cedar Falls and SUI graduate.

Barry Has 17 of Ohio Delegation

COLUMBUS AP Barry Goldwater of Arizona has a nice nest egg of Ohio votes in the Republican national convention. Thirty of Ohio's 58 GOP delegates replied to an Associated Press poll. Seventeen said they favored Goldwater and two leaned toward him. Three favored Nixon and two leaned toward him. One favored Lodge and one leaned toward him. One said Taft Jr. is their choice. One leaned to Romney and two were undecided. The delegation is pledged to Rhodes as a favorite son on the first ballot.

Inmate Guilty of Man slaughter in Prison Stabbing

Jerry Louis Parsons, 27, was found guilty of manslaughter for the April 4 stabbing death of Earl Lee Bonjour, 26, at the state prison kitchen in Fort Madison. Parsons claimed self defense and faces sentencing Monday.

Flying Prisoner Returned After Air Escape Crash

Steven Barner, 23, who escaped from a state penitentiary farm stole an airplane and crash landed near Grinnell. He was captured and returned to prison Thursday night by two guards from the penitentiary at Grinnell Hospital where he was treated for injuries. Barner’s condition was reported as good.

Authorities hunt Friday for the revolver used to kill Edna Deal 29 in Dana schoolyard near Jefferson Iowa The husband Air Force Sgt Lee Merle Deal 30 is due for a preliminary hearing next Thursday on an open murder charge He says he does not recall the shooting and says he discarded the gun while driving toward Grand Junction after wife refused to let him see their four children The couple had separated and Mrs Deal had filed for divorce February 8 detailing alleged abuse involving the children

Parole Eastern Iowan On Bad Check Charge

John Podgurski, 21, sentenced to seven years in the Anamosa reformatory for false uttering of a check in Buchanan county. He was paroled to the California parole board after being apprehended May 4 in California where he worked as a dye cutter. His employer posted a 2500 bond and Podgurski waived extradition to return to Independence for court appearance.

Yeoman Resigns from Monticello City Council

Monticello city council member Willard Yeoman resigns after serving since January 1962. Joe Jones is appointed to fill the vacancy. Jones, a Dried Whey Inc. partner, has lived in Monticello about three years and never held public office before. Yeoman did not state a reason for stepping down.

Cabin Burns on Dean McCully Farm near Columbus City

A five-room cabin on the Dean McCully farm six miles southeast of Columbus City was destroyed by fire at 10:15 p.m. Thursday. Cause of the blaze was undetermined. Only Roy Rodin and George Miles held networks for KCRG TV-9's late week news.
