Oil firms seek restraining order over Iowa unit occupation tax
Fourteen major oil companies led by Standard Oil of Indiana filed suit in Des Moines federal court seeking a temporary restraining order to block the Iowa State Tax Board from collecting the unit occupation tax on their bulk stations. The case involves about 158000 dollars yearly and contests whether bulk stations are taxable retail stores or interstate facilities.

Mrs. Mary Prowse aged 91, longtime Manchester resident, died after a week of illness. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown funeral home with Rev. J. Frank Moore presiding. Born Mary A. Frentress in Illinois in 1844, she married twice and lived on a farm north of Manchester before settling in the city. Survived by son E. H. Prowse of Rockford. A longtime Eastern Star member with a 50 year life membership.

Three Jailed In Iowa City For Forgery
Three Iowa City residents arrested in Rock Island faced forgery charges in Iowa City. Carlysle Wilkinson allegedly passed a worthless check for a used car. Memorial Day Traffic Warning From AA MVA Leader
Des Moines AP Lew Wallace president of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators urged Memorial Day motorists to stay in line and avoid passing to cut fatalities. He ordered state highway patrols to handle heavy traffic and called cities and states to use all manpower to reduce road deaths. He noted a 16 percent drop in highway fatalities in Iowa in the first four months, with 122 deaths versus 146 a year earlier.
