Arts Beyond Bars expands university prison study program
The Arts Beyond Bars initiative at UI launched last fall to strengthen campus prison ties through a speaker series that drew 35 lecturers for Oakdale Correctional Facility. Nearly 100 inmates attended, with 68 earning university credit for courses including yoga and a prison choir. The program aims to deepen civic engagement, family bonds, and pathways for re-entry, while expanding to a co taught course with undergraduates and a Patrick Kuo memoir study led by Kathrina Litchfield.
