Whale Population Still Declining
Washington AP reports the right whale population has fallen from tens of thousands to perhaps fewer than 1,500 individuals. Dr. Roger Payne notes in National Geographic that the name comes from nineteenth century whalers who called it the right whale to hunt due to its slow swim, rich baleen, and tendency to float after death.
