Hoover Visit Signals Food Policy Breakthrough for Truman
President Truman invites former President Hoover to discuss feeding war torn Europe. The move marks a shift from partisan politics to using top experts, including Hoover and new appointee Clin ton Anderson, to tackle food production and distribution challenges.
House Votes Tariff Power For Truman Policy
In a 239 to 153 vote, House Democrats grant the executive board authority to cut tariffs under the reciprocal trade act, backing President Truman's push for expanded powers to pursue a broader tariff policy. The measure extends the act for three years and aims to match a level of tariff reduction up to 75 percent below Hawley Smoot benchmarks, with Senate consideration to follow.
