An Associated Press survey of the 100 largest firms finds 75 percent have no programs to employ welfare recipients, with only eight having active hires and 16 considering initiatives. Executives cite a need for specialized skills, downsizing, or lack of interest as reasons.
An Associated Press survey shows some large companies pursuing welfare to work with programs at United Airlines and Sears Roebuck. United Airlines plans to hire 2000 welfare recipients by 2000 and has a mentoring program. Sears Roebuck has a national initiative and has already hired nine people off welfare in Memphis Tennessee.
