Iowa Civil Rights Act reshaped by identity protections shift
Iowa has long led civil rights but recent moves altered protections for gender identity. The Legislature removed gender identity from the Iowa Civil Rights Act, prompting debate among Republicans about safety and tradition, while opponents warn it erodes gains for LGBTQ Iowans and civil rights history. Officials note ongoing enforcement and education efforts as officials shift to new governance structures and monitor complaints.
