Strope sentenced to prison in Linn County thefts

Michael Strope, 42, former Linn County facilities manager, given up to 10 years for degree theft and five years for felony misconduct in office, to run concurrently. He admitted misappropriating about $180,000 over 30 years and apologized in Linn County District Court. He was fired February 3, 1999, after Linn County Auditor Linda Langenberg raised concerns from a tip about false claims.

Iowa City climber ends bid for Everest summit

Huss of the Everest Environmental Expedition 2000 abandoned the climb at Camp 4 due to a bacterial infection. He will descend with teammates as monsoon season starts. Six climbers reached the summit while Huss stayed to assist and later reported they are safely back at Camp 4.
