Spokesman Brian Carlson said a consular official was dispatched to Burgas to assist Bulgarian authorities. Officials believe five American citizens were aboard but will not release names. Born in Iowa City, he graduated from the University of Iowa and worked in Iowa newspapers prior to World War II Army service.

Republican Dianna Stadtmueller termed the push inappropriate and noted similar absences by other legislators. Bisenius was still abroad on a fourth Middle East trip. he faces re election in 1982.
President Jaime Roldos of Ecuador and his wife Marta Sabia plus Defense Minister Gen Marco Sabia died in a plane crash near the Ecuador Peru border while returning from a visit to the disputed border. Vice President Osvaldo Hurtado automatically becomes president for the remaining term.

Strong storms appeared in western Tennessee and southern Indiana, and weather stretched from the Northwest to the Great Lakes.
