A $250,000 federal suit filed in Cedar Rapids accuses Milwaukee Road of negligence in training and assigning 18 year old John I Gill to a dangerous running switch. Gill was killed June 28 1968 when he leaped from a freight car as it hit another car at the Cedar Rapids yard. Settlement talks continue until June 12.
Cedar Rapids man Richard D. Richardson twenty was arrested in Ottumwa with a stolen 1968 Cadillac and faces car theft and larceny charges. He allegedly took a May 14 television from Eugene Herdliska and was ordered to enter a plea by Tuesday while held on bond.
Marengo Iowa. The search for 15 year old Dennis Kinzenbaw continued Monday as Marengo fire department and Iowa county civil defense personnel combed the Iowa river for his body. Kinzenbaw, son of the Dean Kinzenbaws of rural Marengo, disappeared Friday afternoon while swimming with friends. He reportedly fought off attempts to help him back to shore.
Edna Eileen Ryan 70 wife of Joseph F. Ryan of Cedar Rapids died after a lingering illness. Born August 2, 1899 in Elma she lived in Cedar Rapids 53 years. Survived by husband two sons Richard J. Ryan Jerre F. Ryan a daughter Mrs A W Gatto two sisters and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by Stewart funeral home with services and prayers Tuesday at the church and at the funeral home. Burial Cedar Memorial cemetery. Casket not opened final condolences at Turner chapel east. Family requests gifts to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Bessie Luella Witte of 4824 Ozark Street NE Cedar Rapids died Sunday after a long illness. Born November 21 1884 in Vinton she married A A Witte February 4 1922 in Brandon. She was a member of First Lutheran Cedar Rebekah lodge CES and World War I auxiliary. Burial Cedar Memorial. services at Turner Chapel East with Dr John Jensen.
John Andrew Knowles 64 of 1004 Eleventh Street NW Cedar Rapids died Saturday after a brief illness. He was assistant manager of Baker Manufacturing Co born September 29 1905 in Albert Lea Minnesota and married Gladys McNeal September 23 1935 in Cedar Rapids. Surviving are two sisters Mrs Clarence Carter Phoenix Arizona and Mrs Bernice Murphy San Jose California. Private services at Turner Chapel East at 9:30 am Wednesday conducted by Rev. Paul J. Maguire of St Patrick's Church. Rosary at 7:30 pm Tuesday. Burial Mt Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 pm Tuesday. Casket will not be opened after the service.
Joyce Ann Casper, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died in Lincoln Nebraska on Sunday. Born January 2 1937 in Cedar Rapids she is survived by three daughters Letha Simmons Cedar Rapids Violet Casper Lincoln Betty Casper Lincoln two sons David Casper Lincoln Daryl Casper Lincoln her mother Mrs Lahoma McCullough Flagstaff Arizona two brothers Wayne Griffioen Cedar Rapids Duane Griffioen Cedar Rapids and sister Aletha Arlene Drees Griffith Indiana Memorial services will be held in Turner Chapel East at a time to be announced.
Mrs. Frank Vetter widow of Frank S. Vetter a Cedar Rapids resident of 24 years died Monday after a long illness. Born May 2 1906 in Oakland she left two daughters Mrs Frank O Parks Cedar Rapids and Miss Martha L Vetter New York City a son David B Vetter New York City six grandchildren and a sister Mrs W S Patterson Ft Myers Fla. She was a member of First Presbyterian church and Chapter 1T of the PEO. Services: First Presbyterian.
Harry Walter Roloff age 89 died Monday after a brief illness. Born January 19 1896 in Dubuque he married Jennie Tindel in 1917. Survived by wife two daughters two sons a sister a brother and ten grandchildren. Services Thursday 10 30 a m Turner chapel east with Rev Michael Volk. Burial Cedar Memorial. Viola Ryan Rathje 58, wife of Edward Rathje of 621 Thirty fourth Street SE, died Sunday. Born June 11, 1912 in Prairieburg, she lived in Cedar Rapids since 1917 and worked 15 years as a receptionist at Concrete Materials Inc. Survived by husband, stepson Edward Rathje Jr., and two step grandchildren. Memorial services at Janeba Kuba funeral home west Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with Revs. Jensen and Roush. Burial in Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Monday. Contributions may be made to Camp Good Health or Cancer Fund.
George A. Sayers 94, a former Cedar Rapids hardware store owner born June 8 1875 in Blairstown, died Friday in Englewood California. Services are planned Tuesday in Englewood after he moved to California in 1943 following many years in Cedar Rapids.

William D. Martin, Democratic candidate for Linn County supervisor, attacked the incumbents over Blairs Ferry road conditions at a Sunday coffee at John O'Regan’s residence in rural Palo. He argued the road is hazardous and noted a courthouse tunnel proposal might have financed bridge repairs.
Cooler and drier air moved into Iowa Monday after a stormy weekend. A weekend thunderstorm caused one death when lightning struck a golfer near Fort Madison. Livestock losses from the storm near Manchester totaled six cows, a calf, and a bull valued at over 2300 dollars, with insurance covering part. A possible tornado damaged a three car garage near Zwingle, and rainfall amounts across several towns are noted, including Cedar Rapids and Manchester.
A $130,000 damage suit against a Toledo man and General Telephone Co. of the Midwest will go to trial in Cedar Rapids federal court June 22 unless settled by June 12. Anton and Mary Vebelacker of Mukwangago Wisconsin allege injuries from a Sept. 18 1967 crash on highway 18 near Fredericksburg. George L Parkinson faces several counts of negligence. The defendants claim the plaintiffs were speeding and hit the side of Parkinsons car. Mrs Vebelacker seeks $100,000 for injuries and $15,000 for expenses and loss of services with her husband asserting equal amounts.
The Smith family were returning from a visit to his parents in Macomb Illinois and aimed to reach Valley View Baptist Church for Sunday services. Smith drives a busload of children to Sunday school and Mrs Smith taught there. He works at Collins Radio Co and their three sons attend Pierce school.
Belgrade AP reports 18-year-old Yugoslav Dunsan Vinco who received a heart transplant on September 18, 1968 has successfully obtained a driver's license marking a notable medical breakthrough and personal milestone.
Elwyn Peterson, 38, of Cedar Rapids pled guilty in Linn district court to malicious injury to a building. He received nine months in the county jail after being accused of throwing a brick through a window at an electric service shop in southeast Cedar Rapids on December 13. Peterson appeared before Judge Clinton Shaeffer.
Larry Smith, 28, of 275 Twelfth Avenue SW, escaped serious injury Sunday afternoon when a boat motor backfired and exploded at the Chain Lakes ramp on the Cedar River. His wife reported the burning craft drifting downstream. Deputies joined the search after a Cedar Rapids boat failed to locate it. Smith, in another boat, swam ashore and grabbed a different craft. His hair and eyebrows were singed as he tried to douse the blaze with a fire extinguisher that failed. He said the burning boat was lodged in river debris. Insurance covered the $1,000 loss.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Donald Canney returned from a three day manpower seminar for mayors of large cities in New Orleans. The event was sponsored by the federal government the National League of Cities and the U S conference of mayors. Cedar Rapids will receive a federal grant for hiring a manpower coordinator and director funded by the U S Department of Labor.
The Cedar Rapids city council hired Public Administration Service of Chicago to conduct an employee salary and position review for the 1971 municipal budget. The study covers up to 50 city positions and a salary survey of other cities, with PAS to be paid about $5,000.
In a $24,937 federal suit, parties have until July 3 to file motions and briefs for submission to Judge Edward J. McManus after trial concluded late Friday. Donald Adams, Belle Plaine Nursery, seeks damages from the Chicago and North Western Railway Co. over a hydrous ammonia escape on June 24, 1964, damaging plants. Several other firms are involved as cross petitioners or additional defendants.
Dennis D. Swearingen, 21, of 2316 Coldstream Ave NE, faced six charges after a 2:40 am pursuit on the southwest side. Police charged him with speeding, failing to stop for a stop sign, attempting to elude, reckless driving, resisting arrest, and driving with a suspended license. He appeared in municipal court and posted bond.
The U S Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded 180600 in interest reduction funds for a 2884000 mortgage on a 192 unit church affiliated project by Northeast Iowa Presbytery of the United Presbyterian church. Geneva Corp plans a 13 story building at Third Street and Fifth Avenue SE for low and moderate income families.
Budget chief Mayo outlined a fiscal 1967 outlook with a $1.3 billion deficit and a current year deficit of $1.8 billion. Outlays rise $4.8 billion above February estimates, while receipts exceed prior estimates by $2.2 billion. Most increases stem from uncontrollable items and a January 1 pay raise.
