Marion Kiwanis organizes a pioneer king and queen contest for the bicentennial festival July 3 to 10. Candidates must be Marion Township residents born on or before 1916 and capable of appearances. Ballots sold at city locations. proceeds go to the Marion Historical Museum. Contacts include Walter C. Rech, 377-2771.
Two people were arrested early Sunday by Marion police on drunk driving charges. Robert A. Zimmerman 18 of Anamosa was cuffed in the 200 block of Seventh avenue and Larry J. Klein 17 of 1115 A avenue was taken into custody in the 800 block of Ninth street. Both were jailed in Linn county for processing. Kiwanis Hiawatha Trails Kiwanis breakfast set for Tuesday at 7 at Sambo s with Keith Black, Grant Wood Area Education Agency counselor for the handicapped. YMCA Marion activity schedule lists multiple classes and swim times for Tuesday. Marion chapter No. 10 RAM meets Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic temple.
Denis Morgan son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Morgan of Center Point received a BS degree in psychology cum laude from Abilene Christian University in Abilene Texas.
Agnes Rey man Buresh a longtime Swisher resident and widow of John Buresh died Saturday at her rural Fairfax home after a brief illness. Born November 13, 1888 in Johnson County she formerly wed Edward J. Kilberger who died in 1930. She is survived by son Edward Kilberger Fairfax four grandchildren and four great grandchildren two stepsons Arnold Buresh and Lumir Buresh and a brother Joe Reyman. Services set for Wednesday at 10 30 a.m. at Brosh chapel with Fairfax cemetery burial and visitation Tuesday at the chapel.
Marion firemen were called to Wilber's Auto Motive and Machine Shop at 2698 Fifth Avenue where a late Sunday blaze caused extensive interior damage and damage to a car inside. The living quarters above the shop suffered extensive smoke damage, fire officials said. The fire was attributed to welding on a car.
Des Moines Iowa governor Robert Ray says the House is not addressing overcrowded prisons by rejecting a $5.5 million medium security prison at Oakdale near Iowa City. The Senate approved the facility to house about 300 inmates, but the House blocked the provision amid support for funding halfway houses and expanded corrections.
The LEAA report based on 130000 victim surveys says violent crime levels did not rise from 1973 to 1974 with no significant changes in rapes robberies or assaults. Burglary and commercial theft rose while overall crime climbed 7.5 percent, driven by sneak theft and commercial burglaries.
Arlen Meyer of Calmar, 20, faces charges of failure to have control and disobeying a stop sign after a Sunday 1:30 a.m. crash in St. Lucas. He failed to stop, turned a corner, and struck a parked vehicle owned by Rose Goerend, causing $1,000 damage to each vehicle. No injuries were reported.
West Burlington man Jerry David Foster was shot four times while helping his mother during a Hill Crest motel robbery near Ft. Madison. Suspects Kenneth W. Lawrence and Gentry Hicks face open murder charges after the incident. Foster’s parents were uninjured and a suspect was held at gunpoint until police arrived.
Gary Frazer 25 of Oelwein faces sentencing for first degree murder on June 24 at 1 p.m. in Buchanan county district court. He was found guilty by an Allamakee county jury in the December 2 death of 16 year old Sheila Lynn Foley of Hazleton.
A blaze destroyed most of the interior of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hansen’s Rochester residence while the couple were away camping. Smoke from an air conditioner prompted bystanders to call Tipton and West Branch fire departments. exterior saved but furnishings lost. Cause under investigation.
