In a preliminary calc the Veterans Administration expects to close six of seven VA hospitals due to a 279 million budget cut for fiscal 1954. About 4 809 beds would be eliminated plus 2 288 already inactive. closings target low demand facilities and staff shortages while maintaining medical standards. Chairman John Phillips says beds and standards will remain intact with savings found elsewhere.
