Des Moines. Speaker Don Avenson plans to resume his bid for governor as early as Thursday after a successful angioplasty at Mercy Medical Center. The 45 year old, who had a mild heart attack in 1985, was treated for a narrowed heart vessel and listed in satisfactory condition. Campaign spokeswoman Paulee Lipsman said doctors are pleased and Avenson could return to campaigning soon.
In a 250 163 vote the House approved halving military aid to El Salvador, then the measure was voided when the broader foreign aid bill failed. The clash marked a rare congressional challenge to El Salvador policy amid the Jesuit killings and broader Central American aid debates.
The House approved the Americans with Disabilities Act by 403 to 20. The measure bans disability discrimination in employment transportation and public accommodations and ensures access to services for the hearing and speech impaired. The bill moves to a House-Senate conference to resolve differences before final passage.
Cedar Rapids resident Leo Lala Jr was found guilty by a Linn County jury of theft by deception for failing to pay a $1 536 bill at the Roosevelt Hotel in Cedar Rapids during December 1989 and January 1990 while on parole. He faces return to prison after parole revocation in February on three prior felony theft convictions.
