Officials rejected proposals to increase the number of choices from 44 to 48 in the Illinois weekly Lotto. After hundreds of protest letters, betters will keep selecting six numbers from the existing pool. U.S. page 4A.
Two 15 year old runaways from Foundation II youth shelter stole a Royal Crown Cola truck near Eagle's Supermarket in Cedar Rapids. Police pursued down I 380 to North Liberty where the truck rolled on the off ramp. The youths were taken into custody and charged with second degree theft and related offenses.
The Rev Tony Gallagher of Walker Bible Church faces new charges after Texas authorities accuse him of pocketing donations from the Rio Grande Children's Home in Mission Texas. Court records show a 1977 Massachusetts conviction for larceny over 100 dollars involving nursing home patients and his state employer.
St Luke's Hospital will not distribute pocket sized breath testers after defects found in 1500 units. Vice President Nancy Schirm said the chemical tubes fail to produce a bright enough color change to indicate intoxication and tests were checked against Breathalyzers at the Linn County Sheriff's Department. The hospital halted distribution and may not order another shipment.
