Vietnam Veterans Memorial design and opening details
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington near the Lincoln Memorial features black granite walls reflecting light below ground level where visitors place flowers and flags. Names of 57 939 dead or missing are ordered by date of death, with Maya Ying Lin’s winning Yale design from 1 421 entries. The entrance will include a flag statue group and five service emblems. Since opening in November 1982 it has drawn over 1 million visitors.
