Disaster Alert System Set Up For Iowa

A 24 hour disaster alert system for Iowa will be fully operational by early June. Four of five required staff have been hired and are in training, with a fifth to be hired soon. The system will have 29 to 30 warning points across the state to notify counties by radio or phone of impending disasters such as tornadoes. Local sheriffs will relay warnings to residents, but many towns lack warning devices. Radar coverage is statewide but cannot detect tornadoes directly. tornado warnings rely on visual sightings. A watch could trigger mobilization of observers to report tornado sightings immediately.
