Wet weather ripens berries but delays harvest and prices
Bock's Berry Farm owner Sarver notes ongoing weed problems from flood-borne seeds and mud from recent rains. Marc Bock reports strawberry blooms promising large fruit, but ripening won’t begin before June 8. California supplies fill shelves at 89 cents to 1.50 per pound while Iowa crops await. Teresa Thorne of the California Strawberry Commission says shipments reach about 3 million trays weekly, with ripened berries shipped next day and vintage weeks rather than years.
