Legislature Cuts Cigarette Carton Price and Buys Time on Tax
Law lowers carton cost by 1.50 to 2.00 with a choice for retailers to absorb 1.80 state tax or add it later. Sen. Norman Rodgers questions absorption while Comito's amendment passes after a prior price protection for tobacco was blocked. State rules now set 4 percent wholesale and 8 percent retail markups. Legislation also approves a bingo bill allowing up to three sessions weekly per location or 14 monthly with 75 percent of revenue given to sponsoring organizations and 25 percent for operating costs.
