Varied East Iowa cultural and arts events calendar

The Gazette reviews a wide array of community listings for two months. Abbe Creek School Museum Opens May 30 in Iowa

The Abbe Creek school museum on highway 150 north of Mt. Vernon opens for the summer May 30. Built in 1856 on land of William Abbe, the first Linn County settler, the brick building served as a school until 1936, became a private home, then was restored and dedicated as a museum in 1964. Operated by Linn County Conservation Board, the museum welcomes visitors 1 to 7 p.m. on May 30 and on subsequent weekends.

Memorial Day events sweep Iowa towns with parades

May 31 observances unfold in Williamsburg Center Point Cedar Rapids and several towns. Veterans groups Cub Scouts and choir join a 10 a.m. Williamsburg square parade and cemetery program while Center Point hosts a 9:30 a.m. Legion Hall program and rain backup at First Christian church. The day features feminist forums civic pageants and a Shrine Circus with multiple showtimes and ticket details across Cedar Rapids Marion and nearby communities.
