Farm officials clash over anti-subsidy campaign tactics

A UPI report from Washington notes Agriculture Secretary Freeman and ASC leader Horace Godfrey accusing critics of aiming to end farm programs. Farm Bureau President Charles Shuman protests Freeman’s orders to ASC committees to persuade farmers to oppose pending legislation, calling it a politicization of farm offices amid broad farmer discontent and dropping prices. Freeman and Godfrey, while denying wide unrest, plan more outreach meetings in Georgia, Louisiana, the Midwest, and beyond to reassure farmers and explain policy aims.

France Tackles Farm Improvement Program

The Orientation Law of 1960 started France’s effort to modernize agriculture. A land reclamation and farm consolidation agency aims to create economic units with a minimum of about 50 acres. Subsidies encourage relocation from crowded to efficient farming regions. Elderly farmers and lack of land push migration from farming to other work, while a retirement and subsidy program supports assets over 65 selling to the agency. A national tour on the impact of this program is planned for June 29 in Delaware County, with farmer visits inside the county.
