Chicago market notes show hogs steady to 10 cents higher, cattle up to 25 cents, and sheep steady to strong. Receipts crowd the board with hogs 9,000 and cattle 7,000. prime steers around 39 dollars, good to low prime fed steers 33 to 38 dollars, and calves and cows varying with weight and class.
Receipts reach 8 500 cattle as calves and steers vary in activity. Fed steers range from 36.25 to 37.25 per cwt with high choice shipments up to 37.00, holsteins at 32.00, heifers 32.00 to 35.00, commercial cows 28.00 to 28.75, utilities 22.25 to 25.50, bulls 27.00 to 38.00, and 2 year old feeder steers around 36.00 with fleshy 35.00 at 800 pounds.
Salable receipts reach 4,000 with calves scarce and steers and heifers active. Cows firm to higher, stockers steady. Top prices include $33.00 36.00 for fed steers, $37.50 for 1 220 lb beeves, $28.00 32.00 for heifers, and $34.00 for 800 lb load lots. Canners and cutters bring $19.50 23.50, medium stock steers $28.50 34.00.
Cattle market in Kansas City reports 4 000 calves offered and slaughter steers and heifers up to 50 cents higher. Good to choice steers 33.00 to 36.80 with high choice to prime around 37.00 to 37.75. Yearling steers around 37.00 and stockers steady with good feeder steers 32.50 to 33.50 for 800 lb weights.
Des Moines reports estimated receipts for the week with 53 000 currently and 27 000 last week while year to date totals reach 32 000. Monday actuals were 43 500 with unloading at 14 packing plants in the region and 30 concentration yards in Iowa and some out of state activity. Hog prices show uneven moves with 160-180 lb barrows and gilts at 18.50 to 20.90, rising to 20.50 21.40 for 180-200 lb and 200-240 lb ranges, and down to 16.75 18.85 for 450-550 lb.
Butchers purchase ranges from 160 to 550 pounds with prices climbing about 10 cents. Rates listed include 170-180 at 20.10, 190-240 at 20.60, 270 at 19.35, 300-330 at 18.85, 360-400 at 18.35, 400-450 at 18.10, 450-500 at 17.85, and 500-550 at 17.35 as buyers pay higher prices across weight categories.
Hog prices in Waterloo show a 25 cent dip across weight ranges with quoted bids from 170 pounds to 550 pounds. Major brackets like 170 180 and 180 190 pounds range around 18 to 20 dollars per hundredweight, while higher weights such as 400 450 and 500 550 pounds hover near 18.25 to 19.50 per cwt. Market trend indicates a downward tilt with overall softness in the hog market.
Cedar Rapids market reports show steady prices with a 25 cent per hundredweight premium for hogs delivered to the Cedar Rapids plant. New York wholesale dairy and egg prices show firmer cheese quotes and steady egg market. Cheddar ranges 42 to 43 1/2 cents, creamery grades 70 to 75 cents, with receipts near 999 thousand pounds and 19 thousand cases of eggs.
President Truman signed a bill suspending the import duty of two cents a pound on copper. The duty remains lifted until February 15, 1953 or the end of the national emergency, whichever comes first, to ensure adequate copper for defense.
Grains rose with wheat leading the uptick as May contracts closed mixed with nearby covering. The United Kingdom bought two wheat cargoes and one corn cargo while other grains showed smaller gains or losses across futures such as corn oats and soybeans.
Chicago AP summary lists cash grain prices with Wheat at $1.76 for No. 2 yellow and $1.70 for No. 3, other grades around $1.62 to $1.72. Barley shows nominal around $1.70, feed at $1.50. Soybeans and oats show no price data.
George Keith Funston 40, president of Trinity College Hartford Conn, will be named president of the New York Stock Exchange likely this week. Born in Waterloo Iowa October 12 1910 he is married with two daughters and currently a director at B F Goodrich Co and Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Co.
Jefferson Iowa Monday night two people died in a two car collision on highway 30 about three quarters of a mile east of town near the new airport. Charles Hastings 49 of Jefferson and Mrs John R Kruser 60 Guthrie Center were killed. Kruser husband deputy agentat Guthrie Center was critically injured and taken to Greene County hospital for surgery. Hastings was passing a semi truck when the crash occurred.
Mrs Ralph Lane about 20 and her two year old daughter Connie died after the car they rode in collided with a train near Greenfield. Three other occupants escaped with minor injuries as Mrs Lane's husband said the vehicle skidded into the train while braking in the rain.
John Carras aged 23 of Sioux City died when a 12 foot storm sewer pipeline ditch he was digging caved in burying him alive late Monday.
Three Tama men pled guilty in district court to larceny of a domestic animal. Judge Tankersley sentenced Harvey See Theodore Hoskins and Raymond See to five years, suspended and paroled to the sheriff. Fred Schmidt pled innocent and remains jailed unable to post bond. The men allegedly stole a hog from Western Buyers at Tama and butchered it near Sandhill on Highway 30 south of Tama.

Miss Catherine Richardson daughter of Mrs Nellie Richardson and Joe Keith Bosteder son of Mr and Mrs Clifford Bosteder of Troy Mills were married Monday at 8 PM in the Christian parsonage by Rev Richard Goins. The bride wore a lace trimmed gown and marquisette skirt with a finger tip veil. Her corsage was red carnations. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Junior Polk of Coggan. Iowa corn planting was 33 percent complete by May 19, down from 41 percent on May 20 last year, while plowing was 72 percent done. Soybean planting began last week with about six percent of intended acres in by May 19, versus 15 percent last year. Pastures and meadows remain productive and alfalfa and clover are in excellent condition.
