Anamosa Lore and Local Oddities From The Editor

In Anamosa and nearby towns colorful notes include the original plat of Strawberry Hill and its 1857 arrival after Lexington was renamed to Anamosa in the 1900s. Stone City’s aging ice wagons spark nostalgia, while Springville limits Main street trucks to 19 feet. A playful tale recalls an eastern Iowa executive selling three cars in one afternoon, and Dr. E Stanley Jones reports paying 128000 for a Hong Kong haircut in Chinese dollars. Jones County records show 178 more fishing licenses issued this year. The piece ends with a riff on Wild Bill Hickok’s Dead Man’s hand and a tease for continued coverage.
