The 10 week nationwide meat strike ends against Swift Armour and Cudahy in a vote approving a nine cent hourly raise. Wilson continues as unions argue contract validity and rehire rights while pickets withdraw at many plants.
Wilson and Company urged an election under neutral supervision to decide if striking packinghouse workers should return to work. The company accused union officials of misrepresentation and outlined a May 25 secret-ballot vote plan at five cities with 8 am to 8 pm polls under NLRB rules.

The fishing boat Squirt capsized a mile off Manasquan inlet during a windy sea. At least two men drowned, 32 rescued including one woman, all taken to hospital. Captain Bauer cited heavy swell and imbalance on the starboard side as the craft rolled. Dead are Charles Heidorn, Elizabeth, and John Lochler. Police and coast guardsmen investigate additional casualties.
The Romanian cabinet revoked King Michael's citizenship and seized all royal property including 159 castles. Also stripped of citizenship were his mother Islena, aunts Elizabeth of Hohenzollern and Leana of Hapsburg, and uncle Nicolai of Hohenzollern for allegedly carrying out maneuvers against Romania.

In Schofield Wisconsin Mr and Mrs Richard Hettinga received a free painting from an unknown painter. He shelled the electric stove and burners and coated a bedspread and toy rifle in white. A blue and white pattern covered the cupboard before attendants removed him to a county asylum.
A 12 year old junior high student named Alan D McCauley was reported missing from his room after a carnival. Police found a ransacked room and a ransom note demanding 1400 dollars for his return, signed The unknown, with a threat if payment was not left at a local parking lot.
An AP dispatch reports a Kansas City mix up over a Margaret Truman name on MCA flight 57. Authorities confirmed the passenger was a 23 year old Miss Truman, a nurse from Independence, Missouri, not the President's daughter, and she plans to marry an army captain.
Audrey Holland 26 admitted he found it too tough to press people for unpaid taxes and resigned as west Conshohocken's tax collector. He said many in arrears were his friends and he lacked the heart to dun them after losing both legs in the Cassino campaign.
U S Consul General Thomas C. Wasson was fatally wounded with two other American naval communications unit members wounded near the Jerusalem consulate. Wasson, aged 52, was taken to Hadassah English Mission hospital after the attack linked to a truce commission. He served in Dakar during the last war and began his Foreign Service career in Melbourne in 1924.
President Juho Paasikivi dismissed Communist Interior Minister Yrjö Leino after a Parliament backed censure. Harbor workers walked out demanding Leino’s retention, claiming police control, as Emo Whailpi was named to succeed him in an extraordinary cabinet session.
In Lunn county district court Judge Floyd Philbrick adjourned the Richard Havlik arson trial until Monday at 9 am. Defense witnesses include contractors E. G. Skogman and Robert Blahnik who gave cost estimates for rebuilding the Buccaneer after the November 22 fire. Frederick Spratt, once Havlik's 49 percent partner in the club, was questioned about interior decoration work and sketches of the Buccaneer interior were entered as exhibits.
A Finnish Communist letter urges Helsinki to seek reduced war reparations from the Soviet Union. Pravda and Izvestia published the letter Sunday. Moscow exposure signals possible Soviet sympathy. The note suggests Finland, and potentially Romania and Hungary, could request cuts under existing treaties.
Oregon voters sent in a tight Republican presidential primary with Governor Thomas E. Dewey holding a slim overall lead over Harold E. Stassen. Unofficial returns from 1,196 of 1,861 precincts showed Dewey ahead as Multnomah County and Portland shifted the balance, while upstate gains narrowed the margin. Dewey spoke from Seattle and Stassen from Minneapolis as results continued to roll in.
Jan j Papanek, former Czech UN delegate, told the security council that 10,000 people have fled since February seizures by the Communists. The council moved toward a vote on a Chilean push for a full UN investigation as Gromyko dismissed the testimony as slander and accused the United States of meddling in Prague. The vote was delayed and the case was set to recur early next week.
