Savannah first steamship crosses ocean from Savannah
The Savannah sailed May 22, 1819 bound for Liverpool as the first steamship to cross the Atlantic without passengers aboard due to fear of a new vessel. Off Ireland she was chased by the British cutter Kite all day as it mistook the smoking ship for a burning vessel. After shots were fired the Savannah finally stopped to explain.
