In Onida a mob of farmers and townspeople threatened to lynch two Chicago youths after officials said they confessed the fatal shooting of Ada Carey a Blunt South Dakota schoolteacher. Norman Westberg and Howard Christensen 17 and 16 were said to have confessed. State authorities planned murder charges and had the youths moved to Pierre for safekeeping after the attack on the teacher following a ride in her car.
The Steel Workers Organizing Committee presents a collective bargaining contract to Jones and Laughlin Steel after the first government supervised employee election. Phillip Murray and John L. Lewis leaders report amicable talks and plan another meeting to review possible signing.
The Steel Workers Organizing Committee secured 17 028 Yes to 7 207 No in a 24 412 ballot count among 27 000 J and L workers. About 2 500 did not vote, with 31 blank, 56 void, and 90 challenged ballots. The result strengthens SWOC leaders Lewis and Murray and pressures other independents in steel.
