The new bridge deck would be built on the pillars of the former rail bridge. I would be annoyed if I couldn’t look up information on my smartphone when I wanted. If I didn’t have a data signal or couldn’t connect to Wi- Fi, I would constantly check for a signal. If I didn’t have my smartphone with me, I would feel anxious. If you agree or strongly agree with these statements, you could have some degree of a newly identified 21st- century disorder called nomophobia, an abbreviation for “ no- mobilephone phobia,” according to new research out of Iowa State University. A 2008 study in the United Kingdom coined the term “ nomophobia” after finding 53 percent of more than 2,100 people polled suffered from the disorder, defined as a fear of being out of mobile phone contact. But subsequent research has been lacking, and only one study has sought to develop a measure for nomophobia, according to the Iowa State study scheduled for August publication in the journal Computers in Human Behavior. “ Although there has been increasing academic interest in investigating the problems emanating from smartphone use, research into nomophobia has been scarce,” finds the study written by ISU graduate student Caglar Yildirim. Worldwide sales of smartphones reached 1.2 billion in 2014, an increase of more than 28 percent, according to the Gartner information technology research firm. The worldwide smartphone industry generated $ 380 billion in revenues last year, CNBC reported, and more than 70 percent of the U. S. population is using them. Previous studies have identified some of the problems associated with smartphone use, including compulsive checking habits, obsessive usage, increased distress and addiction, according to Yildirim’s report. S. recall of potentially deadly air bag inflaters could take years to complete, industry experts and safety advocates said, as automakers scrambled to line up replacement parts — some not from Takata. After doubling its recall of defective air bags this week to nearly 34 million vehicles, the Japanese company and competitors raced to ramp up production of replacement parts. The complexity of the recall could play out over at least two years, said Kevin Pollack, vice president for Stericycle ExpertSolutions, which is helping some of the affected automakers. “ There weren’t 30 million extra air bag inflaters sitting around,” he said. A Takata spokesman said the company would raise output to 1 million inflaters a month by September, up from 500,000 a month. The recall includes automakers such as Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi and Chrysler, but the full scope of makes and models among the 34 million vehicles being recalled — roughly 1 in 7 vehicles in the United States — may not be known for days. The New York Times reported the company acknowledged manufacturing errors and flaws in Drivers and dealers face ‘ nightmare’ of massive recall ; RECALL, PAGE 9A Cyclists, walkers could go between Cedar River Trail and NewBo district By Rick Smith, The Gazette CEDAR RAPIDS — Backers of a proposed pedestrian and bike bridge across the Cedar River from New Bohemia to the Cedar River Trail at Mount Trashmore won strong support Wednesday from the City Council’s Development Committee. The proposal comes from the Southside Investment Board and calls for construction of a bridge deck on the pillars of an abandoned CRANDIC- owned rail bridge. Much of the rail bridge’s deck was knocked into the river by the Flood of 2008, and what is left would be removed to make way for a lighter pedestrian and bike deck. Steve Sovern, who is on the Investment Board’s bridge committee, told the council committee Wednesday that construction of the bridge using the rail bridge pillars would cost about $ 2 million, including work on the approaches to the bridge. He suggested the project could include a signature design to make it an attraction and add, perhaps, $ 800,000 to the cost. Sovern called the damaged former rail bridge, which had been out of use for more than 30 years, a “ sleeping giant.” He said its transformation would enhance the city’s trail system and give pedestrians and bicyclists an option to get to and from the Cedar River Trail and the New Bohemia entertainment district. After the meeting, Sovern said Alliant Energy, which owns the CRANDIC Railway Co., has said it will give the bridge to the city as part of the trails project. He said much of the support for the project would come from private donations, and he told the committee there has been “ some excitement” on that front.
