Fumes Likely Fatal CO Poisoning Near Oxford

Lakeview Elementary students and staff faced a tragic incident as Cassandra Maier died from carbon monoxide exposure after a family sport utility vehicle became stuck in water north of Oxford. Primary details indicate windows were left down, the car sat in water, and authorities continue to investigate whether ventilation or catalytic converter factors caused the poisoning. Debra Maier, Cassandra’s mother, was hospitalized but released, while four children remain hospitalized. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department treats the incident as an accident and pending tests seek to determine how long the family was in the vehicle.
