Injured teen pulled from old mine shaft near North Buena Vista

A 14 year old boy fell about 40 feet into an open mine shaft on a farm near North Buena Vista. Rescue workers rappelled down around 9 30 p m to reach him and lift him out at about 10 p m. Authorities were called at 7 22 p m. The boy, Jessie Schmidt of rural Holy Cross, remained conscious and was treated for possible broken arms before being transported to a local hospital.

DOT Approves Funding for Cedar Rapids Airport Corridor

The Iowa DOT Commission okays 4.3 million for south Cedar Rapids projects including a 4-lane Wright Brothers Boulevard expansion to the Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport and an 80 percent state grant for a rail spur to the BioFuels Gas & Electric gasification plant. Design starts this year with completion in 1998. The city shares equal the airport commission and a southwest urban renewal district. The rail spur to the gasification plant will cost 73,734 in state funds with the city providing 18,433 and 22 jobs expected within two years.

Medical Super Glue edges out stitches in wound care

A study of 130 emergency patients finds octylcyanoacrylate glue closes wounds faster, with less pain and similar healing to sutures. It may reduce infections and eliminates stitch removal, sloughing off with skin after weeks. Research led by Dr. James Quinn at the University of Michigan and funded by Closure Medical Corp. of Raleigh.
