Gene therapy aims to shield bone marrow from chemotherapy
In San Diego researchers propose arming healthy cells with the cancer MDR1 gene to pump out poisons, letting doctors use higher drug doses. Dr. Gottesman of the National Cancer Institute plans trials on breast cancer patients within a year, using a modified virus to insert MDR1 into bone marrow cells.
