USS Stark captain Glenn Brindel testified that warning came only seconds before Iraqi Exocet missiles hit the ship killing 37 and wounding 21. He said he could not determine fault and that the attack offered little time for defense. An unexploded warhead found aboard Stark was disarmed and moved to USS LaSalle.
A late Wednesday afternoon thunderstorm lashed Eastern Iowa with 50 mph winds and heavy rain, uprooting trees and knocking down power lines in Cedar Rapids. A tree crashed into Mary Nejdl’s home at 1512 16th Ave SE, while a tornado was sighted but did not touch down near Solon. The line moved from Johnson County toward Cedar Rapids and northward.
Des Moines police shot and killed Patrick Bert Riley 34 after a burglary and hostage episode at a 12 unit apartment complex. Two victims died from gunshot wounds, including resident Cathy Schultze, 25, and manager Shirley Davis, 51 survived. The gunfire began when Riley pistol whipped staff, as officers returned fire at multiple doors during the pursuit.
Velma Hansen, 59, died when a candle started a blaze in her electricity-free Lamont house. Her brother Peter, 62, escaped through a kitchen window as flames gutted the two story structure. Fire crews fought the fire for four hours after alarms rang at 12:12 a.m. The cause remains under investigation by officials and the state fire marshal.
Contra leader Adolfo Calero testified that Oliver North helped the rebels gain more than 33 million dollars in contributions and weapons while William Casey Elliott Abrams and North kept tabs on aid strategies during the ban. Maj. Gen. John Singlaub said Abrams was briefed on soliciting foreign contributions.
