By Bob Considine aboard USS Mt. McKinley the U S reveals a hydrogen bomb as a deliverable weapon from a B 52. The nuclear blast over Namu island produces a 100 mile span of a mushroom cloud, an air burst of unprecedented scale and a warning of the bomb’s reach.
A mid June test reportedly plans a more interesting hydrogen shot, possibly a warhead on a pilotless missile. The blast at Eniwetok stunned witnesses as the B 52 crew and 13 500 American personnel showcased united services and near flawless teamwork in a fusion detonation.
GM trimmed production across divisions and announced layoffs as May output is forecast at 478,324 cars, the lowest since September. The United Auto Workers Local 3 urged a mass meeting and a 50 million dollar federal public works program to help 125,000 unemployed in the city, while dealers report weak sales and thin profits.
Cedar Rapids police complete inquiry into the death of 43 year old Mrs Edward Skorepa of 2637 Fruitland boulevard SW. Investigators say she fell from the garage loft in the dark while seeking her husband and died from a fractured skull. Her husband had recently driven the car into the garage before illness forced him to the rear of the space.

M V Shover of 4030 First Avenue protests the special permit via attorney James Bramwell, citing impact on nearby residential property value. Council defers until written protest is filed and will inspect the site, with a decision likely at Thursday's meeting.
Sheriff James Smith warns about high-powered rifles after a dog was killed and two children aged 9 and 15 escaped harm in a Marion area alfalfa field. The incident occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday when a bullet struck a dog within 20 feet of the children and other bullets whizzed by.
Memorial Coliseum income trails 1955 as January through April 1956 yield totals only 5,891.78 versus 10,512.26 in the prior year. City Treasurer W E Miller cites fewer coliseum rentals as the main cause with a 12 month budget of 42,145 and 22,500 expected from income sources.
Norfolk Virginia AP Miss Minnie Mangum pleaded guilty to an embezzlement scheme that drained almost three million dollars from the Commonwealth Building and Loan Association over 22 years. Defense counsel sought a 30 day deferral for a probation report. Judge Lawrence Bullock scheduled sentencing for June 25 and allowed Miss Mangum to remain free on $50,000 bond.
The Census Bureau in Washington estimated the U S population reached 167 440 000 on April 1 including armed forces overseas. This marks a gain of 16 308 000 people or 10 8 percent from the 151 132 000 counted on April 1 1950.
In New York a heroic apprentice fireman leaped from a dockside stroll to swim 200 yards and rescue Ruth Johnson from a sinking 33‑foot cruiser after a coastal tanker rammed and split it in two. Rupert Watt 20 pulled Johnson 35 to safety as others were saved by nearby craft. Ruth Nettles 58 died.
Sam Goza 28 admitted to shooting his wife after she spoke in sleep of her former husband. Police said Goza believed she had been seeing her ex and quoted him saying a man can take just so much of that.

The United States considers and studies tentative talks to establish regular air service between Russia and the U.S. Pan American holds the certificate for Moscow and Leningrad service if approved. The State Department notes prior Western proposals for normal air transport talks and says no formal decision or guidance to Pan American has been given yet.
The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, upheld FCC authority to set blanket ownership limits on radio and TV outlets. Storer Broadcasting challenged the rule, which capped one company at five AM, five FM and five TV stations, or seven TV if two are UHF, and blocked its Miami expansion. Boston The chief economic adviser to President Eisenhower, Arthur Burns, warned that the nation’s economic stability hinges on courage and wisdom from business and government. He cautioned inflation and recession remain possible, yet noted four factors support price steadiness and urged disciplined fiscal policy and pricing restraint.
Comptroller General Joseph Campbell testified that the defense department overstated obligations by about 400 million dollars and did not fully reveal links between appropriations and carryover funds. He cited planning deficiencies in non military aid by the International Cooperation Administration as senators probe unobligated foreign funds potentially exceeding six billion dollars. Chairman George warned unexpended funds worry the committee, amid Eisenhower's request for a 2.2 billion dollar increase.
Des Moines officials debate a Daylight Saving Time plan as City Council considers delaying effect. An amendment to shift start year failed 4 to 1 with key votes from Denny and Iles against, others for. The measure, affecting only city staff and functions, was set for publication timing.
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that state right to work laws do not apply to railroads, upholding a 1951 amendment to the National Railway Labor Act. Justice Douglas said Congress may set policy on union shops, with states free to prohibit or allow them outside railroads. The Iowa law and other state bans remain intact where not covering railroads.
