Farmers Must Get Gas Tax Refund Permit
About 200 000 Iowa farmers must pay $1 and submit new applications to claim gasoline tax refunds after July 1. Treasurer John M. Grimes explained changes under the new law, including renewal every two years, and that refunds cover fuel used for nonhighway farm purposes. The law also taxes fuel oil used in road maintenance and relocates monthly refund distributions to quarterly to cities and towns.

Fewer Hands Are Needed on Today's Farm
James Marlow reviews farm labor trends from 1910-14 to 1946 using Agriculture Department figures. Despite fewer workers and farms, land under cultivation rose and farm sizes increased, while cash receipts more than doubled to 23.9 billion dollars in 1946, aided by government subsidies. Net income varied widely by farm size, with big farmers earning much more than the average and small farmers far less.
