Ex-rowing coach turns to triathlon training in Iowa City
Iowa City residents train in Mandi Kowal’s garage studio as the former University of Iowa rowing coach builds TRI-Umph Today Coaching. Kowal, 54, coaches adults and kids in triathlon, emphasizing the journey and personal growth beyond the sport. She led US rowing when varsity status began in 1994, expanded UI programs, helped secure the Beckwith Boathouse, and later adopted a daughter from Vietnam in 2007. Kowal coaches 15 adults this spring and offers swimming lessons to over 100 children, with many transitioning to triathlon training this summer. She notes the sport’s growth and tailors plans from Kona aspirations to finishers.
