A spark from a plasma torch reportedly ignited refuse in a large metal workshop behind Newport Flowers at 2125 Wilson Ave SW. Firefighters saved the structure but a big hole was burned in the roof. No injuries were reported.
Cedar Rapids police used a K-9 unit to smoke out a burglar at the Tobacco Outlet on Mount Vernon Road SE. At about 4:25 a.m. the entry door glass was found broken and Curtis Padgett, 21, of Cedar Rapids, surrendered and was arrested on suspicion of third degree burglary.
The last day to register to vote for the June 4 primary is Saturday. The Linn County Auditor's Office will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 930 First St. SW. Call 892-5300 for status checks and visit linncounty.org for forms.
