Phone Rate Proposals Spark Consumer Debate in Iowa
Northwest Bell president Jack MacAllister told about 250 Iowa stockholders in Cedar Rapids that usage based pricing for local calls and for directory assistance could be fair, noting heavy users pay more while stressing job stability and ongoing sales efforts. He cited 62 percent of directory inquiries for numbers already listed and 80 percent made by 20 percent of customers. He left open the possibility of directory assistance charges if Iowa law allows.
