Beef Exports urged after cattle advisory committee findings
The national cattle advisory committee urged beef export promotion and cooperation with industry and government. It proposed using the Agriculture Department market development program for funding and called for new anti import efforts with Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Mexico plus more deals with Central American nations. It also recommended emergency loans for farmers, continued beef purchases, selective grading changes, and optional lean meat yield grading.

Veterinarians Plan Rotating Work and Grad Study
Three veterinarians launch a rotating staff clinic to pursue advanced degrees while keeping operations running. They tie with Iowa State University to serve as salaried instructors during study visits. Current partners Neubauer Kopf will be joined by Dr. Dick Marshall next month. Neubauer departs June 8 for Leipzig/Giessen credentials. The trio plans a new clinic building on Highway 61 this year.

Neighbors Help Plow Farm as Kirk Rebounds After Injury
More than 40 men to the Clifford Kirk farm northwest of Alburnett assisted in plowing and planting. Kirk, hospitalized with a knee injury, was home briefly then returned. Workers used 29 tractors, 10 disks, eight plows, five harrows, a spring-tooth harrow and four 4 row planters to plow 55 acres and plant 100 acres of corn plus 20 acres of soybeans. They returned to finish the work the next day. Les O De an set up welding on site. Linn Co op Oil supplied fuel. Twelve women cooked meals. some men later started on Charles Schaeffer farm. Schaefer is recovering from surgery.

Bayard Scott, Benton County, describes four years of corn with minimal tillage. He moved from plow to wheel-track methods and now uses a semi homemade rig with a John Deere four row planter and Krause rotocultivator. He eliminates soil disturbance, improves seedbed prep, and adjusts row markers for 38 inch rows. He plants 21 000 plants per acre with 100 pounds acre of 7 28 14 starter fertilizer plus lar din.
