The Daily Record notes cooler Friday with occasional showers in the extreme west, and a generally fair, dry outlook for Monday and Tuesday. It lists low and high temperatures, wind details at Municipal Airport noon, and daily sun data. Local crime notes include fines for drunkenness, larceny, reckless driving, and traffic violations. Several obituaries and funeral notices conclude the item.
In Washington the Civil Aeronautics Board continued deliberations on Parks Airline of East St. Louis after final oral arguments. Parks pressed to retain its 3100 mile Midwest feeder route, briefing the panel with new stock purchases and cash, three twin-engine planes, and a plan to start service within weeks. The board declined to reopen the record but heard a second motion urging reconsideration of revoking the certificate.
Washington AP money for faster warplanes and new anti submarine weapons was urged by the house appropriations committee in a 625 million dollar deficiency bill sent to the house. It includes 75 million for plane development by NACA and 7.385 million for an anti submarine warfare project with details withheld. The bill also covers 50 million for Korea aid, 99.43 million for the post office and 246.15 million for the Veterans Administration.
New York record company Remington Records announced a price drop to 99 cents per long playing record from 2.85 to 4.85. President Donald Gabor cited a new liquid-material process cutting disk cost to about three cents, versus 50 to 60 cents for vinyl. The cut applies to a catalog of 500 musical numbers across popular and classical genres.
Two thirds of all red bean seed in the United States is produced in Twin Falls County Idaho.
A plantings project at Coe College funded by President 8B. S. Hollinshead and Owen Elliot aims to beautify Old Main and Carnegie Science Hall with evergreens and ivy for year round greenery. The Cedar Rapids Garden Club supports the effort with a $2,000 gift for planting near Hickok Hall or the T. M. Sinclair Memorial Chapel, funded by proceeds from the 1948 and 1949 garden shows aided by the Martha Marquis circle. The Linn county nursery of Center Point, the low bidder, handles current planting around Old Main and Carnegie hall.
Cedar Rapids chambers of commerce reported April totals across 27 firms at 12,359 workers, up from 12,230 in March but above April last year’s 10,750. Outbound carloadings fell versus a year ago, while inbound carloadings rose from March and matched or exceeded prior April levels.
Princess Taka, 20, third daughter of Emperor Hirohito, married Toshimichi Takatsukasa, 26, a railway engineer, in a brief Shinto ceremony at Takamatsu on Shikoku. Five thousand well-wishers braved rain as the couple exchanged vows over cups of sake. Only thirty relatives attended the ceremony.
The Bever Park Zoo in Cedar Rapids reports a 15 monkey shipment from the East Coast delayed by weather sickness and delivery issues. A second batch of rhesus monkeys from Massachusetts is expected around June 1, same type as last summer. Arrival will be announced upon reaching the zoo.
William Behrens chairman of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce highways committee has resigned due to other business. He has led the committee for five to six years. No successor named. E. F. Bud Stepanek will serve as acting chairman.
A sudden Saturday squall in Kagoshima Japan sunk at least one fishing vessel and scattered 55 boats along the coast. Local crews battled choppy seas as winds intensified and fishing crews reported returns of damaged gear and missing men.
Irvin Kirkpatrick of Cedar Rapids was elected president of the Battery E Association at the Cedar Rapids VFW club annual meeting. Leo Ruby of Cedar Rapids was noted as former president while LeRoy Quinn of Marion was re elected secretary treasurer. The Battery E unit served in 1917 18 including Camp Cody New Mexico and France and will hold memorial services for departed members May 30 before citywide Memorial Day events.
Cedar Rapids observed Armed Forces Day with a cloudy dawn and outdoor events proceeding. Only one of three planned flyovers occurred as weather or late arrivals affected others, while the parade and Municipal Plaza speech stayed on schedule and a late-afternoon crowd was hoped for at the National Guard Armory open house. An invitational dinner hosted by the Linn County Reserve Officers Association was planned for tonight at the Montrose hotel.
Dr. Lydia T. Jordan of Davenport was elected state president of the Business and Professional Women's club at the Cedar Rapids convention. Other officers include Vera M. Norman of Sioux City first vice president Maye Hagen of Dubuque second vice president Clarita Langston of Keokuk recording secretary and Frances L. Coates of Des Moines treasurer. Announcement was made at 3 p.m. Saturday during a luncheon attended by about 600. The convention runs through Sunday with a memorial service and installation of officers.
Washington AP reports the AFL Switchmen's strike set for next Tuesday on 10 Midwest railroads was postponed to June 1. The National Mediation Board will seek a settlement, with mediation starting next Tuesday in Washington. The union seeks a 40 hour week with pay, plus time and a half for Saturdays and double time Sundays, while continuing current pay for many yard roles.
On May 19 1950 O J Elsenbast was appointed administrator of the Austin Mulvany estate in Linn County Iowa. All debts owed should be paid to the administrator and all claims must be filed with the Linn County Iowa District Court Clerk duly authenticated.
A Senate appropriations subcommittee urged a full investigation of sex perversion in Washington. Lt. Roy Blick estimated up to 5,000 perverts in the capital, with three-fourths government employees, including 300-400 at the State Department. Officials denied presence of known perverts on payroll. The panel urged inquiry into whether perverts hold key jobs and what reforms and rehabilitation are needed.
A 23 year old Des Moines housewife says Evangelist Jerry Curly Owen fathered her two year old child and offered to testify. She alleges a 16 year old pianist was intimate with him during a six state revival tour. The accuser says Owen paid hospital bills for the baby born Nov 11 1947 and promised marriage. Owen, currently in Baltimore, denies the younger woman’s claims.
Humboldt attorney Franklin Jaqua, 50, announced his bid for one of Iowa Supreme Court GOP nominations to be decided at Des Moines in July. He is the son of the late Frank Jaqua, a noted Iowa publisher, and a 1942 University of Iowa Law School graduate. He has served on the Iowa State Bar Association board of governors and as president of the Fourteenth Judicial District Bar Association.
Kenneth Delano of Pentwater Michigan was sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison on a charge of embezzlement by bailee and was transported there Friday by Deputy Sheriff Larry Condon.
Gerald E. Frederick 21 Hubert F. Gallagher Jr. 28 and Norma Stegan 24 pled guilty in traffic court to reckless driving. Stegan fined 100 dollars, both men 50 dollars each plus costs. Stegan arrested at First Avenue and Fifth Street SW for erratic truck driving with no lights. passenger William E. Shutterly 42 charged with drunkenness. Frederick and Gallagher arrested after midnight and observed driving with lights off, speeding and running a red light. Gallagher later seen staggering and entering a bank lot before attempting to drive off.
Four Cedar Rapids youths pled guilty to stealing 20 cartons of cigarets from a filling station at Eighth avenue and Third street SE. John Maghula Donald Dodd Robert C. Connet and Joseph T. Shanklin faced $50 fines with costs. fines suspended for Connet and Shanklin and partial suspension for Maghula and Dodd. They agreed to restitution.
In retaliation for Potsdam pass withdrawals the United States and Britain limit Soviet military missions in Western Germany. U S members may travel only between home and office, while British members are confined to the Potsdam Berlin highway. The Soviet mission in the British zone is limited to Bad Salzuflen to Helmstedt route.
James B. Mooney, 28, of Chicago, pled guilty to failing to have his car under control and was fined $100 with costs in police court. Judge Williams Matias suspended $50 of the fine. Mooney had faced reckless driving charges after a May 5 accident in which a parked car belonging to Orville E. Jones of Worthington Acres was struck. Mooney was hospitalized with fractured ribs and agreed to pay for damage to the Jones vehicle.
John Frank Louvar, 61, of route 2 pled guilty to drunkenness Saturday in police court and was fined $50 and costs by Judge William Matias. He was arrested about 9:45 p.m. Friday by Detectives Jake Stusak and Jerry Navratil who found him asleep behind the wheel of a car parked in the line of traffic at Popeta Avenue and Seventh Street.

Detours are gravel or paved and open dates vary from immediate to indeterminate, with many as of August 1 1950 or September 1st.

The Senate backed President Truman’s plan to dissolve the maritime commission and shift its duties to the commerce department. It marked the first favorable vote on a Truman reorganization, with 59 opposing the Brewster resolution and 14 in support of rejecting the maritime plan. The change takes effect May 24 unless the House blocks it.
The state of Iowa Linn County on May 19 1950 appointed and qualified O J Elsenbast as Administrator of the estate of Louis A Andrews late of Linn County. Creditors are directed to present their claims for immediate payment and to file them in the Linn County District Court's office.
