RiverRun in Cedar Rapids Tied to Vision Iowa Grant

The RiverRun redevelopment hinges on an $8 million white water course to qualify for a $10.5 million Vision Iowa grant. Cedar Rapids voters face a June 10 vote on a two year 0.5 percent local option tax to provide at least $42 million in local matching funds. Local leaders say the course is essential to attract regional visitors and fulfill public demand for a riverfront upgrade.

From Vietnam vet to soldier for God

Decorated veteran John Steer, now a country gospel artist, will speak and sing at Anamosa’s Moving Wall memorial service on Saturday. He survived brutal battles in Vietnam but lost an arm and nearly his life, and will share his faith and patriotism.

Moving Wall exhibit to visit Anamosa near softball field

The Moving Wall, a half size Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica touring since 1984, will be in Anamosa near the softball field across from the Wapsipinicon River Bridge from Tuesday through Memorial Day May 26. Opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday with speaker John Steer, honoring families of fallen troops. Sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 568 and other veterans groups.

Powerball draw delayed by traffic in New Jersey

The Powerball drawing Saturday was delayed when a security official couldn’t reach a Clifton New Jersey site and his backup was on active duty. The process resumed nearly two hours late after ensuring security and computer systems in New Jersey and the U S Virgin Islands matched. No one matched all six numbers 5 13 18 42 50 and 4 Power Ball. The jackpot rises to about 23 million for Wednesday.

Family in SUV rescued after carbon monoxide exposure

Six members of a family were rescued after their sport utility vehicle stalled in 2 feet of water on Swan Lake Road. A mother and five children were hospitalized in Iowa City around 8 30 p m with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Two turkey hunters, Jake Williams and Greg Hess, found the father running for help and assisted until responders arrived.

Four men tied to al Qaida arrested over Riyadh attacks

In Riyadh four suspects with apparent al Qaida ties were arrested after last week’s deadly attacks on three housing compounds that killed 25 including eight Americans. Interior Minister Prince Nayef said the four knew about the May 12 assaults but did not participate. Investigators identified three of the nine attackers’ bodies.
