Timber rattler misread as danger in Iowa wilds
In a secluded Cedar Rapids area, a 3 foot timber rattlesnake suns on limestone while Roger Johnson notes many rattlers inhabit south facing rock outcrops nearby. He downplays danger, calling the snakes timid and vital as bellwethers for rarer species, urging respect over killing. Johnson has visited the dens for over 30 years.

DNR Proposes Safeguards for Iowa Snakes
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources proposed protecting snakes, including timber rattlers, from commercial harvest and indiscriminate killing at a May 11 Natural Resources Commission meeting in Anamosa. Experts caution the plan is a modest step, urging higher protections while noting den destruction and slow reproduction threaten rattlers. Comments run through June 21 and a potential fall implementation is possible.
