Supreme Court limits parochial school funding powers

In a 6-3 decision the Supreme Court upheld the Pennsylvania law’s textbook provision for private schools but struck down direct loans of materials and equipment and funding for counseling testing and therapy. Justice Stewart led the ruling with dissents from Brennan Douglas and Marshall.

Patch Quarrel Over Base Use Ends In Regret

The Ford administration expressed regret for using Thai bases in the Mayaguez rescue and Thailand called the letter acceptable. Thai Foreign Minister Chatichai said the communication affirmed Thai sovereignty and would not recur, as student protests continued outside the U.S. embassy in Bangkok.

Israel Faces 16th Arab Bomb Incident in a Week

Sappers defused a bomb in a paint can in crowded Jerusalem near Jaffa Gate. A border patrol killed an Arab attempting to cross the Lebanese border. Another Arab died from a grenade he held as he aimed at students. A 25 year old Arab hid on the Acre college roof and police found fragments of a grenade. In Lebanon nine Arab children died from a shell, with five wounded. Rabin announced 500 apartments to be built at Sharm el Sheikh, saying it does not mean annexation. Sadat said he will unite Arabs against Israel when meeting Ford in Salzburg on June 1.
