President Truman urged immediate congressional action on national health and disability insurance as crucial to national welfare. He argued the plan would cover medical costs and lost earnings, address hospital and personnel shortages, and rely on private doctor choice while expanding access regardless of status.
Bayne Freeland reports Cedar Rapids high schools reshuffle coaching duties under a new system approved by Supt Clyde Parker. Twenty eight coaches face one major head post at 500 and one assistant at 250. eighteen positions remain open. Some feel slighted as contracts now separate coaching pay from teaching salaries.
Center Point defeated Hayes Consolidated 6-2 as Bus Zieser and Bob Lala led with a triple and a double. Zieser pitched a solid game, fanning 12 through seven innings. Monona edged Woodward 1-0 in a pitcher duel as Kenneth Kuester struck out 12, with Wally Mohrman scoring the deciding run on Don Huinker’s double.
Des Moines report says Robert D. Clark and his wife strolled downtown when a passerby flagged him to a car. The stranger struck Clark in the mouth and drove away, leaving witnesses stunned by the flashing novelty bow tie.
Cedar Rapids will raise water rates about 15 percent effective June 1 with minimum bi monthly bills rising for most homes from to in the model figures. Some meters may not be read until after the change and early bills may reflect old rates. The measure was approved by the city council after Finance Commissioner Louis D Burgos announced the date.
Washington United Press reports Secretary of the Treasury Snyder, opposed to immediate income tax cuts, said a period of tax reduction is approaching though he did not specify when. He urged modernizing the tax structure with careful consideration of the family tax plan used in community property states, and emphasized revenue adequacy and debt reduction in any revisions.
Sunday brought the warmest reading of the season in Cedar Rapids with 82 degrees between 2 and 4 pm, breaking the previous high of 80. Monday featured cooler temperatures and overcast skies with .13 inch rainfall in the morning, while statewide outlook called for fair weather tonight in the east and central portions.

CHICAGO INS Walter Slawinski, a 47 year bachelor, appeared in a police showup after arrest for carrying a gun. Asked why he had the weapon he replied he carried it to scare a woman who has been bothering him.
A Navy fighter plane from Lambert Field crashed on a Burlington Iowa playground during a show, killing pilot Lt (j.g.) John Peeler and two boys, 16-year-old Ronald Hagemeier and 14-year-old Richard Grant. Six youths were injured as wreckage damaged nearby homes and a school backstop.
In Forest Park at Grand and Jefferson drives in St Louis a patrol car of Police Sgt John E Rooney and Patrolman John V Cunniff followed an order to investigate an open man hole. The right front wheel got caught in it, delaying their response as officers improvised a safe exit.
President Truman reported his 94-year-old mother was better as he spoke to reporters at 6:20 am after a prebreakfast walk. The update came from the Hotel Muehlebach where he spent the night, about 17 miles from Grandview, her home.
DES MOINES INS Gov Robert D Blue signed the eighty five million Iowa veterans bonus bill Monday. He also signed a nine million seven hundred thousand two hundred twenty two dollar department appropriations bill for two fiscal years and vetoed four measures as he cleared all Fifty second general assembly legislation. The bonus requires a public vote at the next general election to take effect.
The Supreme Court ruled that plant guards deputized by local police are employees under the National Labor Relations Act and may join unions that also represent production workers. The decision covered Jones and Laughlin Steel Otis Works Cleveland and E. C. Atkins Indianapolis tools maker. Justice Murphy authored both majority opinions. dissents by Vinson, Frankfurter, Jackson, and Burton.

The House Post Office Committee backed a bill to raise postal rates by about 110 million dollars annually to offset a 492 million dollar expected deficit. Air mail would rise to six cents per ounce while first class stays at three cents until July, with several other increases and unchanged postcard rates for regular mail.
Incinerator workers oppose a three cent an hour raise approved for garbage drivers and a general ten cent boost for others, arguing they should be paid the same as drivers who now earn 1.13. CIO leader Bill Smith says incinerator staff were not consulted and deserve equal pay. Mayor Hahn says drivers are a different class and the issue will be discussed further with department heads.
