Senate approves on farm digesters in Iowa bill action
The Iowa Senate advanced House File 522 to permit on farm anaerobic digesters at animal feeding operations replacing open air pits. The bill passed 38 to 7 after brief remarks by Sen. Ken Rozenboom. Critics warn digesters may boost large scale confinement and inflate biogas claims. Iowa has four on farm systems including Amana Farms and Top Deck Holsteins. Governor Reynolds would need to sign HF 522 if the House agrees.
